Mamelodi Sundowns humble Polokwane to extend Betway Premiership lead

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Polokwane City 3-0 to extend their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership table to five points with three games remaining.

The defending league champions put on a solid display at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday as they edge closer towards their ninth consecutive title.

Iqraam Rayners opened the scoring for the Tshwane giants in the 32nd minute with a good header following a cross from Teboho Mokoena.

The home side looked more threatening in the second half with Tashreeq Matthews coming close from a Marcelo Allende corner before extending the lead with a neat finish in the 56th minute.

The visitors were then handed a lifeline in the 63rd minute when Aubrey Modiba handled in the box, however Puleng Marema missed the resultant penalty.

Masandawana continued to pile on the pressure as they looked for more goals and were finally rewarded five minutes from time through a Nuno Santos finish.

The sees Sundowns move five points clear of second placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand, while City remain sixth.
