Amelia Kerr stars as New Zealand are crowned Women's T20 World Cup champions

All-rounder Amelia Kerr stepped up with both bat and ball in a superb performance in the Women's T20 World Cup final to guide New Zealand to a 32-run win over South Africa.

The White Ferns came into the tournament on a 10-game losing streak and rank outsiders, but their victorious run continued in the Dubai final as South Africa were unable to get near their total of 158 for five.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to avenge their heart-wrenching defeat in the same tournament 12 months ago. However, they came up against a well-prepared and professional New Zealand outfit and fell short once again.

Suzie Bates got them off to a strong start with 32 runs off 31 balls before being bowled by Nonkululeko Mlaba. She shared a 37-run partnership with Kerr, who scored a very impressive 43 off 38 balls to put her side in a strong position at 141/5 when she was eventually dismissed.

Brooke Holiday also made a vital contribution with the bat, blitzing 38 runs off 28 balls to help New Zealand Women set an imposing target of 158/5 from their 20 overs.

Mlaba was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 2/31 from the four overs, with Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tyron, and Nadine De Klerk all chipping in with a wicket apiece.

The South Africans got off to a strong start with the bat. They looked to be putting themselves in a winning position before Tazmin Brits was dismissed in the seventh over on 18 to put them at 51/1.

Laura Wolvaardt was the first of Kerr's three wickets when she fell on 33 a couple of overs later and, from there, South Africa utterly collapsed.

The only players able to get into double figures after the openers were Tyron (14) and Annerie Dercksen (10) as New Zealand managed to take wickets on a consistent basis to stifle their progress.

South Africa eventually scraped to 126/9 in their 20 overs to fall 32 runs short of their goal and lose a second World Cup final in a row.

Rosemary Mair and Kerr starred with the ball. Kerr finished with figures of 3/24 from her four overs while Mair got 3/25.

It was a historic day for New Zealand cricket after the men's side won its first Test in India in 36 years.
