Australia were wobbling on 129 for five in response to their opponents' 188 but Travis Head's blistering 119 off just 134 deliveries, with 12 fours and three sixes, lifted the hosts to 283 all out at Adelaide.
Shamar Joseph's eye-catching debut continued with figures of five for 94 but the Windies subsided to 73 for six at stumps on day two - still 22 runs shy of making Australia bat again.
Hazlewood was the destroyer-in-chief, picking up wicket maidens in each of his first three overs to see off captain Kraigg Brathwaite, fellow opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and middle-order bat Alick Athanaze.
The relentless fast bowler continued to earn reward for staying disciplined outside off when Kavem Hodge edged into the cordon while Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon claimed a wicket apiece.
The Windies are now reliant on wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva and the bowlers as they look to eke out some sort of lead but Australia are firmly in the driving seat in the first of two Tests.
