Junior Proteas confident ahead of ICC T20 World Cup Super Six stage

Junior Proteas all-rounder Jemma Botha says the team is confident going into the Super Six stage of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

This comes after South Africa’s dominant display against Nigeria, with a convincing win by 41 runs at Borneo Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Botha says they look to maintain their winning momentum going into the most crucial stage of the tournament.

“It’s been really positive, the girls are confident that we won all our games so far. And now that we are in the Super Six we don’t really want to change any plans, we still want to be aggressive and dominate in the Super Six. The girls have been really united, backing each other, which is beautiful to see. We just want to take each step in our stride and see how far we can go, and hopefully we can get to the final,’’ said Botha.

Botha, teaming up with batter Simone Lourens have managed to produce a consistent partnership since their opening match of the tournament, to help South Africa secure four out of four wins.

She says following the game plan has helped with putting the team in a good space.

“The main thing we focused on was to stay calm and Simone helped a lot with that. So it’s about making good runs and making sure that we put the team in a really good space,’’ added Botha.

The 17-year-old says despite her slow start in the two previous matches, she’s proud of how she managed to quickly pick up against their African counterparts.

“I think I have been under-performing in the past two games, and I am happy to have picked up so quickly and contributed in the match against Nigeria. But it is not about me, it is about the team and we look ahead to the next stage,’’ she expressed.

The Proteas now move to focus on the Super Six stage of the tournament, where they will face Ireland on Saturday followed by a clash against the USA next Tuesday.
