South Africa finally cleaned up the tail and were aggressive in chasing down the remainder in a clinical performance on Day 4.
It was a Test match that ebbed and flowed, surprising considering that hosts Bangladesh were skittled out for just 106 after opting to bat first. South Africa finished Day 1 on 140/6 and with the ball turning square and standing up off a length, the end was already nigh.
But Kyle Verreynne prodded his way to a century and the visitors found themselves with a very handy 202-run lead after the opening salvos.
Rabada was fired up at the advent of their second innings, sending Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam and Monimul Haque back to the hut in quick time. At 112/6 and needing a chunk of runs just to make the Proteas bat again, Bangladesh were staring down an innings defeat. But Mehidy Hasan Miraz and debutant Jaker Ali racked up an incredible 138-run seventh-wicket partnership to give the hosts a sniff.
Miraz would fall just three short of a deserved century after nicking off that man Rabada early on Thursday. His efforts had taken Bangladesh to 307, leaving the Proteas 106 to win the Test.
South African openers Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram weren't hanging around. They scored at a fair clip before Taijul Islam clean-bowled Markram for 20. De Zorzi was the next to fall to the spinner, but his seven boundaries had broken the back of the chase, leaving the rest of the lineup just 37 runs to find. Tristan Stubbs collected a brisk 30 not out on the way to securing a memorable Test win in tough conditions.
The victory sees the Proteas move up to fourth in the World Test Championship standings. The second and final Test begins in Chattogram on 29 October.
