Marco Jansen: We have to win those small battles

Proteas allrounder Marco Jansen has outlined their change in approach after suffering a massive 61-run defeat in the opening T20 of the current four-match series against India.

The hosts managed to bounce back in the second clash in Gqeberha on Sunday, as they restricted the visitors to a relatively low 124/6, albeit the two-wicket victory came under serious threat with a middle-order collapse during the chase.

However, Jansen revealed the discussions that took place in the wake of that thumping at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium last Friday.

"After the first game, we sort of spoke about it and we knew we didn't play at our best, to call it as it is, and in the second game, the whole focus was just to try and give ourselves the best chance to win," said Jansen.

"Because we all felt, especially with the bat – we did decently with the ball after they got off to a good start, we pulled it back nicely – everyone felt we could have done better.

"In terms of whatever it is, making better decisions or taking a different chance at a different time, or whatever the case may be.

"So I think in the second game, we were a lot more focussed on winning those small battles because in T20, in two or three overs, there's a lot that can happen.

"So for us it was just a focus point of trying to win those small battles, and I think we won most of those small battles, even though it was a lower scoring game."

The 24-year-old, who recently returned from injury, says coming up to Gauteng for the remaining two matches in the 20-over series will require them to continue restricting the Indian batting line-up as early as possible into innings.

"It's always difficult in the powerplay because you know, especially these guys, they don't second guess themselves, they go full tilt," he added.

"So I think for us, we're just going to try and – because in the highveld, the ball travels a lot more than at the coast, so it's important to take wickets at regular intervals.

"Because it's very difficult to restrict or maintain the run-rate in the highveld, because of the ball that flies around everywhere, so I think if we can get wickets at regular intervals, that would stop the scoring rate and hopefully restrict them to a lower total."
