Nthabiseng Nini: Nigeria victory great for African Cricket

South Africa Under-19 bowler Nthabiseng Nini believes Nigeria’s historic victory over New Zealand at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup is a huge achievement for Africa.

The West Africans recorded their first-ever victory in their debut Cricket World Cup, as they beat the Kiwis by two runs in a nail-biting affair in Malaysia on Monday.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Nini feels Nigeria’s historic feat is good for the sport on the continent, and she now looks forward to meeting them on Wednesday.

“Seeing Nigeria getting a historic win, it’s great to see other African countries taking up the sport,” said Nini.

“It is good for us and the continent, and we are looking forward to the all-African clash on Wednesday.”

The SA U19 women are unbeaten in this tournament, having also beaten New Zealand in their opening match before making light work of Samoa

The 19-year-old bowler believes they can achieve great things in Asia as she shared her experience so far, and touched on the tough pitch conditions in Sarawak.

"My assessment of the tour so far has been to keep everything I've learnt simple, and just continue to do the basics I've been taught, and also not taking any game lightly," she added.

"Winning two games in a row is something we've worked hard for, no matter the opposition we're playing against, it really is special for us as a unit.

"I wouldn't say it was a tough pitch to play on, it was also not favouring any teams, so I think just sticking to what everyone has prepared for and giving their plans another chance, anything can happen."
