The Capitals’ win in the Jukskei derby saw them move slightly up to 14 points, just one point behind the fourth-placed Super Kings.
Verreynne believes the Capitals’ ruthless approach won them the game, which is something they lacked in the early stages of the tournament.
“Ja, we have had a tough run in this competition, so the message from myself and the coach was that we need to keep it nice and simple, and make sure we do the basics well” said Verreynne.
“I thought we were really exceptional and also very ruthless, which is something we’ve lacked in this competition for a while.”
Verreynne says they have to carry the winning momentum into their next two matches against second-placed MI Cape Town in their bid for a place in the play-offs.
“I don’t know if we need bonus points, but I definitely think we need to win one of the upcoming two games against MI Cape Town,” he added.
“If things go our way, we probably have five games left in the tournament – hopefully, so it’s important that we carry a bit of momentum going forward.
“Obviously getting a win is imperative and I think what we did today was really good.”
The wicketkeeper-batter says the new faces in the team showed hunger and brought in a refreshed approach throughout the match against the Super Kings.
“I said earlier that in any sport, when you start to freshen up and bring new guys, you sort of get that immediate impact – I think we had five changes there, so they were hungry and we wanted to play, we saw that on the field today.
“In saying that, I think the guys that missed out were also exceptional in the building up phase, so it’s been a team effort all in all,” he concluded.
