Proteas looking towards the future ahead of T20 series in West Indies

Aiden Markram wants the new players coming into the Proteas squad to learn as much as possible when the T20 series against West Indies gets underway on Friday.

The Proteas skipper will be without a number of players that did duty in the T20 World Cup final in June where Markram and his charges came close to winning the tournament.

Teenage fast bowler Kwena Maphaka and all-rounder Jason Smith are the uncapped members in the 15-man party while a number of fringe players will get an opportunity to impress in the latest series in the Caribbean.

Markram said the upcoming three games in Trinidad is about building squad depth in white-ball cricket ahead of future global tournaments.

"We have selected personnel with the ability to play that way," Markram said. "But for them the whole tour is a big learning curve in their careers, especially the new guys and the fresher faces.

"Understanding the environment, getting a bit of a feel for international cricket, ultimately becoming permanent fixtures in our team and putting in match-winning performances for South Africa is what it's all about.

"You look at what the main goal is of each series from a long term point of few. You are going to have series when results don't go your way, but it will still be good for your team in the long run."

Markram himself took some time off after the agonising seven-run defeat to India in the T20 World Cup final but got back into the swing of things in the recently-concluded Test series in Caribbean.

Temba Bavuma is skipper in the longest format while the T20 series will also see Rob Walter resume his duties as white-ball head coach.

Markram added: "They're two completely different formats, and having two sets of staff is actually quite refreshing.

"I've got no problems (adapting). Each coaching group bring their unique energy to each series, with fresh ideas, so it's been cool. Rob (Walter) also touches base with Shuks (Conrad).

"Captaincy is not a big deal to me. As long as there is consistency we can have continuity, even though the squads will change.

"Players just want to feel backed and know that what they bring to the table is good for the team."
