Rain plagues opening day of Proteas' first Test against West Indies

Only 15 overs were bowled on a rain-interrupted opening day of the first Test between West Indies and South Africa in Trinidad with the Proteas 45/1 at stumps.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good batting wicket. It was a cautious start from openers Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram, who managed to successfully fend off tight and accurate bowling from the West Indies opening bowling pair of Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales.

Windies captain Kraigg Braithwaite decided to bring on Jason Holder in the 14th over and it paid off immediately as the experienced all-rounder bowled Markram with his very first delivery. Holder hit the deck hard with a ball coming into the right hander on the angle and that skidded a bit low off the deck. Markram's feet were stuck to the crease when the ball sneaked past his stumps and rattled the off stump as his dry run in red-ball cricket continues.

Tristan Stubbs faced just five deliveries before the rain began to come down. There would be no further cricket played for the rest of the day as the weather gods had the final say despite the weather forecast for the day having looked quite promising.
