After choosing to bat, the West Indies soon found themselves in trouble. Indian quicks Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat were miserly up front, but captain Rohit Sharma didn't hold back his match-winner.
Introduced as early as the ninth over, Ashwin went to work quickly, finding purchase and Taganarine Chanderpaul's off stump with a beauty that beat the outside edge. Fellow opener Kraigg Braithwaite then spliced one for a soft dismissal and when gloveman Ishan Kishan took a good low catch off Shardul Thakur's bowling, the hosts had slumped from 31/0 to 47/3.
Never far from the action, Ravindra Jadeja picked up Jermaine Blackwood and Joshua da Silva for cheap, leaving the West Indies reeling at 75/5.
Debutant Alick Athanaze was the only batter to put up stoic resistance. With a maiden test match half-century in sight, Ashwin collected his third, sending Athanaze back to the pavilion for 47.
Siraj would contribute one wicket while Jadeja and Ashwin cleaned up the tail, bowling the hosts out for 150 just after the tea break. Incredibly, Ashwin's 5/60 marked his 33rd Test match five-wicket haul.
"There was moisture in the pitch in the first session," reflected Ashwin, as per espncricinfo.
"It got slow and started to spin a bit more. It got a lot more slower. Personally enjoyed my first spell and had to adapt a bit more after. Not surprised with the pitch, expected it to be a bit dry. In my previous tours of West Indies, when it spins, it also tends to be slow."
Sharma did the bulk of the Indian scoring when play resumed, but once Yashasvi Jaiswal found his groove, he too scored freely. West Indies also attempted to spin their way back into the contest via Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican, to no avail. India finished the days play on 80 for none, with Sharma's form looking ominous for the hosts.
