Ryan Rickelton's maiden century powers Proteas in second Test against Sri Lanka

Rickelton, playing his eighth Test match, replaced the injured all-rounder Wiaan Mulder in the playing XI and made an immediate impact, contributing 101 runs off 250 deliveries in South Africa's first innings.

The innings total reached 269/7 at stumps, with Rickelton's score standing as the highlight. He faced 250 balls, striking 11 fours, and was dismissed after a crucial 133-run partnership with captain Temba Bavuma. Bavuma contributed a steady 78 runs off 109 balls.

Rickelton's path to his century wasn't without drama; he was initially given out on 98 runs, but a successful review overturned the lbw decision, allowing him to reach the three-figure mark.

The partnership with Kyle Verreynne also played a vital role in stabilising the innings, with the pair adding 77 runs for the sixth wicket.

Verreynne remained not out on 48 runs at stumps, as South Africa's batting effort looked to build on Rickelton's remarkable debut.

At the close of play, South Africa's score stood at 269/7, with three wickets in hand, putting them in a strong position for the following day's play.
