Chasing a target of 210, the Capitals were in cruise mode when opening pair Rahmanullah Gurbaz (86 from 43 balls) and Will Jacks (64 from 35 balls) raced to 154 without loss after 12 overs.
The wheels well and truly fell off in the remaining eight overs though as the visitors imploded, losing six wickets as Afghanistan bowling duo Noor Ahmad and Naveen-ul-Haq starred for the Super Giants in the closing stages.
Left-arm wrist-spinner Ahmad (2-34) removed both Jacks and international teammate Gurbaz while seamer Naveen showed nerves of steel when asked to defend 14 runs in the last over.
Earlier, New Zealand superstar Kane Williams, making his SA20 debut, top-scored with an unbeaten 60 from 40 balls as the home team posted a 209-4 in their 20 overs.
Bryce Parsons (47 from 28 balls) and Matthew Breetzke (33 off 20 balls) had given the Super Giants a fantastic start as the pair added 67 in the first six overs before spinner Senuran Muthusamy put a brake on the scoring with a brilliant spell of 3-21 in his four overs.
Williamson started slowly but accelerated excellently and received explosive support from Wiaan Mulder, who hit three sixes in his 45 off just 19 deliveries as the two put on an unbroken stand of 91 off 41 balls.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday in the return fixture at Centurion.
