SA20: Paarl Royals at the top of the table after seeing off Joburg Super Kings

Paarl Royals went to the top of the SA20 standings after beating Joburg Super Kings by six wickets at Boland Park on Monday.

The visitors posted a total of 146- 6 in their allotted overs with left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin the best bowler on show with figures of 2-22 in four overs.

The Super Kings started slowly and found themselves in trouble at 72-5 in the 14th over as Fortuin and fellow slow-bowlers Joe Root (1-16) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1-28) made inroads into the batting unit.

Jonny Bairstow and Donovan Ferreira then added a 67-run partnership in the final six overs to take the visitors over the 140 mark.

England international Bairstow struck two fours and three sixes on his way to a belligerent 60 from 40 balls while Ferreira was unbeaten on 32 from 19 balls (one four and two sixes).

The hosts were quick out of the blocks in the the run-chase with Lhuan-dre Pretorius hitting 27 off 14 balls but the left-hander fell to fast bowler Hardus Viljoen (2-23).

The Royals also lost Root (6) and Rubin Hermann (19) as they slipped to 68-3 in the ninth over but a stand of 71 between Mitchell Van Buuren and captain David Miller effectively settled the contest.

Van Buuren lost his wicket for 44 but Miller (40 not out off 32 balls) was on hand to hit the winning runs with a massive six with five deliveries of the match to remaining.

All teams have now played five matches in the tournament, halfway through the league phase, with the Royals having won four to sit two points above MI Cape Town at the top of the standings while the Super Kings are third having won two.
