South Africa qualifies for World Cup Super Six, but more is required

South Africa may have qualified for the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup Super Six, but they are the first to admit their three matches in Benoni so far have been far from perfect.

In their 45-run win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday, the young players held their nerve for the second successive match and defended a low score.

Two days earlier, the SA side posted 112/7 in their 44-run win over Scotland, the same score against the UAE, and both times they needed the bowlers to save their innings.

But, Captain Oluhle Siyo has not given up on the batters and is adamant they will once again prove their worth, after making 166/5 in their loss against India on the opening day.

“Maybe for the last two games it has been like that, but our batting unit is very very strong, and we will be coming back stronger. Obviously, (against) India we put up a big score and we're hoping to get back on that road. But definitely, we will, in the Super Six,"  she claimed.

Potchefstroom will host the next stage of the competition, with four teams from the 16 eliminated.

For the South Africans, winners of Group A, Bangladesh will be the first stumbling block.

Bangladesh upset favourites Australia by 7 wickets in the first round of the tournament before a 10-run win over Sri Lanka, who will be the hosts' second Super Six opponents.

Bangladesh also got the better of SA in the warm-up matches.

Speaking to SABC Sport, however, Siyo is confident they know what it takes for the much-needed redemption.

"We really going to have to go out there and put a good score on. They've got a quality batting line-up, and they've been scoring lots and lots of runs, so our bowling attack just needs to get a bit more disciplined, 'cause maybe we won't get away with as much as we have been," she said.
