Set a target of 180 to win and level the series, South Africa failed to take advantage of a strong start and fell 30 runs short at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, marking their third successive T20I series loss against the islanders.
In pursuit of the hosts' 179/6, openers Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton were off to a flyer. Hendricks piled into Roston Chase, launching him for 22 runs in five balls at one point. Rickelton was a bit more measured at the other end, but signalled his intentions with two sixes.
At 63/0 in the fifth over, the Proteas were in cruise control. But Rickelton, Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram fell in the space of 23 runs. Tristan Stubbs and veteran Rassie Van der Dussen steadied the ship, putting on 43 runs together to put South Africa within touching distance, just 51 behind with seven wickets in hand.
But the wheels fell off, with Stubbs, van der Dussen and Donavan Ferreira falling in consecutive overs. West Indies quick Shamar Joseph cleaned up the tail, finishing with 3/31 while Romario Shepard impressed with 3/15.
Earlier, the West Indies enjoyed contributions all the way down the order to reach their 179. Shai Hope was destructive at the top, racking up 41 off just 22. Fellow opener Alick Athanaze chipped in with 28, while captain Rovamn Powell hit three sixes in his 35 of 22. Lizard Williams was the pick of the Proteas bowlers, skidding his way to 3/36.
