West Indies secure series sweep against stumbling Proteas

The West Indies romped to an eight-wicket victory over South Africa in Tarouba on Tuesday night, securing the T20I series 3-0.

It was a weather-affected affair, with play starting an hour late and then interrupting the Proteas' innings, with DLS adjusting the Proteas' 108/4 to a target of 116. The hosts chased it down with ease.

Openers Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton were pegged back somewhat by the West Indies spinners. Rain returned in the fifth over with the Proteas at 23/0. When they came back, the match had been reduced to 13 overs a side. Hendricks was struggling and needed 20 balls for his 9 runs before tweaker Akael Hosein got his man almost as play resumed.

Captain Aiden Markram scored freely before falling for 20 in the ninth over, bringing the in-form Tristan Stubbs to the crease. He blasted 40 off 15 to give the Proteas score some respectability.

In the chase, the hosts stumbled early. Spinner Bjorn Fortuin got Alick Athanaze in the first over, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Nicholas Pooran was in an aggressive mood. The wicketkeeper hit four sixes in his 35 off just 13 before holing out in the deep thanks to a slower ball from Ottneil Baartman.

Shai Hope and  Shimron Hetmyer then steered the West Indies to a comprehensive victory against the inexperienced Proteas bowling attack.
