Cricket South Africa making strides in developing women’s cricket

Cricket South Africa mass participation coordinator Buhle Vaphi is thrilled with the strides they have made in unearthing women’s cricketers through the KFC Mini Cricket league.

With 120 000 children having participated in this programme, CSA’s objective is to provide a platform for budding cricketers, like 16-year-old Karabo Meso, who was recently called up to the Proteas Women squad for the T20 series against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Vaphi says they’re proud of this achievement as their goal is getting more women to play cricket professionally.

"It's really amazing that 60 percent of attendees is a girl child, so it just shows that girls cricket is growing and that is beautiful for us as Cricket South Africa," said Vaphi.

"Because we want to make sure that equal opportunities exist for a girl child – we have Karabo Meso, who comes from Rockville in Soweto and recently got a call-up in the Sri Lanka series.

"And Karabo played KFC Mini Cricket, she went through all the pipeline structures at Cricket South Africa, and moved to the women's finals that took place in Cape Town last week.

"You had Jemma Botha, who also comes from KFC Mini Cricket, who was player of the match, so it says to us that KFC Mini Cricket is working, we are fulfilling the objectives for us as CSA to make sure that we're feeding the pipeline.

"But also, the most important thing, we want to instil the love of the game at this very young age."
