Founder and chairman of the foundation, Patrice Motsepe was flanked by Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, SAFA president Danny Jordaan, and his Netball SA counterpart Cecilia Molokwane when the announcement was made at the Sandton Convention Centre earlier on Thursday.
Motsepe was asked why the Foundation were willing to share so much of their wealth, particularly towards youth and school sports, to which he willingly responded.
"The point I want to make [after] there was an important question asked at the back [of the room] – why are we as the Motsepe family spending so many resources in schools and education, it's because we are what we are because of the people of this country," he explained.
"And those to whom God has given more, He expects so much, so much more."
SAFA boss Jordaan also noted that school sports is a priority for African football governing body CAF – an organisation led by Motsepe as its president.
"First of all, I must congratulate the Motsepe Foundations as well as the Department of Basic Education for what is a very important launch this morning," he added.
"We started off with the Motsepe Foundation in the Kay Motsepe Cup, and then CAF had a new president, who announced for the first time that the focus is school's football, and today we have the Pan-African School's competition."
