SAFA JHB to decide: Jordaan or Ledwaba?

The newly elected SAFA Johannesburg regional executive has a big decision to make, regarding its nomination of incumbent Danny Jordaan or Ria Ledwaba for the SAFA presidential elections in June.

This was revealed by SAFA Johannesburg President Phil Mogodi, who was re-elected unopposed at the region™s conference, which took place at Safa House this past weekend.

One of the biggest regions in the country, SAFA JHB is one of the most influential regions because of its base in the economic hub of the country, and also where most professional football teams, as well as both the SAFA and PSL headquarters, are based.

œI said the decision was taken. But remember today, we™ve got a new executive and that final decision will be coming from it, they must give the President of the region some powers on who to vote for," Mogodi tells SABC Sport.

œThe President or Vice-President of the region votes at the Congress because sometimes there™s an issue of mistrust, so we must check and make sure that you do the right cross.

œWe are meeting in the next five days and we will make the final call there, we cannot be waiting for the Governance Committee, we have to decide now.

"We need to have a Plan A and B. And, as things stand our Plan A, according to our last executive was Dr Jordaan."

The Association's elective congress is scheduled for 25 June in Johannesburg but all the nominated candidates will only get confirmation of their candidacy once the newly appointed Safa Governance Committee has verified their eligibility to stand, based on the organization™s statutes.

Jordaan, who is gunning for his third successive term in office, is rivaled by Ledwaba - the current Deputy President, former SAFA NEC member Nomsa Mahlangu, and SAFA Tshwane President Solly Mohlebang for the presidential position.

However, Mogodi was also quick to point out that they are still open to meeting Ledwaba.

œI mean, if Ms Ria Ledwaba can come to me and talk to me, I'll listen to her. But the members of Johannesburg have to take a decision. And when they take a decision, I must follow. And that's how it works, he noted.

The candidates will know their standing once the Governance Committee has pronounced on their eligibility, which must be confirmed at least 14 days before the elections take place.

At the SAFA national elections, regions are entitled to four votes. And there is also associate members and special member, the National Soccer League, who will be voting.
