Akani Simbine qualifies for Olympic 100m final

South African sprinter Akani Simbine has qualified for a third straight Olympic 100m final.

The 30-year-old Kempton Park-born athlete won his semi-final in Paris on Sunday night with a time of 9.87 seconds.

He finished ahead of Botswana world championship silver medallist Letsile Tebogo (9.91) and defending Games champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy (9.92).

He will now line up for the final at 9.50pm with the fifth-fastest qualifying time behind Kishane Thompson (9.80), Oblique Seville (9.81), Americans Noah Lyles (9.83) and Fred Kerley (9.84).

Unfortunately he is the final South African in the competition after Shaun Maswanganyi and Benjamin Richardson failed to advanced to the semis.

Maswanganyi could only manage fifth in his first heat (10.02) while Richardson was third in the third final heat (9.95).
