Mulaudzi was excluded from the Australia squad for the World Cross Country Championships due to injuries.
At 25 years old, Mulaudzi secured za spot in the preliminary 30-member provisional team selected by ASA for the upcoming World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, scheduled for March 30, 2024.
Since departing from the Zoo Lake training group and reuniting with his former coach Richard Meyer in February, Mulaudzi – formerly Seboko – has experienced the most successful season of his career.
Hi clinched victory in four 10km races and secured his first national Cross Country title.
Representing the Boxer Running Club, Mulaudzi’s exceptional year has earned him a lucrative three-year sponsorship from Puma.
With all the pieces falling into place, he has already resumed training after a brief two-week break, preparing diligently for the upcoming event in Belgrade. Mulaudzi is also excited that his best friend Andries Sesedi, the SA 10 000m champion has also made the team.
“I am truly excited to be a part of the World Championships team. Initially, I had set my sights on traveling to Australia in March, but unfortunately, I didn’t qualify, and injuries further compounded the situation. The period at Zoo Lake was undeniably challenging, but my fortunes have taken a positive turn since making the move. Missing out on the Australia event was disheartening, but now I am filled with enthusiasm and am already contemplating how I can contribute to the team’s success in Serbia. My preparations for the event will commence next week, and with the entirety of December, January, and February at my disposal, I am determined to be well-prepared for the championships,” shared Mulaudzi in his interview with SABC Sport.
The unassuming runner believes that a turning point in his fortunes occurred in July when he changed his last name from Seboko to Mulaudzi.
Dealing with the aftermath of his mother’s passing in 2011 made the process of altering the surnames a lengthy and intricate one.
Mulaudzi, who was brought up by his grandmother in the North West, achieved a personal best time of 27 minutes and 56 seconds in the 10km race this year, but is determined to improve it in the New Year.
He attributes his success to the support of his training partner, Marko Burkarizza, his coach Meyer, and the monthly stipends he receives from Boxer, without which he believes his accomplishments would not have been possible.
“I am determined to maintain unwavering focus and intend to savour the festive season alongside my family and training regimen. My prayer is for a season in 2024 that is free from injuries and marked by consistent performance,” remarked Mulaudzi.
