On Thursday, the interim nominations committee convened at the Southern Sun OR Tambo to announce the list of board candidates. Mazars, the auditing firm, presented the report, officially notifying members of their nominations.
The eagerly awaited elections will be held on 30 November at Sascoc Headquarters in Rosebank. Five members are vying for the position of first vice-president, with Lwandile Simelane seeking a second term against competitors Themba Selvin Hlasho, Linda Zwane, Kim Pople, and Zikie Molusi.
Controversial Netball South Africa (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane is vying for the role of second vice-president, facing competition from Zwane, Qondisa Ngwenya, Nomsa Mahlangu, and Winston Abram Meyer.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Molokwane expressed her willingness to serve on the board if elected.
“If my team chooses me to run for a board position, I would be pleased to contribute. Let’s wait for the election results and see what unfolds,” she shared with the national broadcaster.
Sam Ramsamy, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) board member, told the national broadcaster that Barry Hendricks, who secured a R66 million sponsorship from Bidvest to support athletes' Olympic preparations, should be given another term.
Ramsamy, an 86-year-old founding member of SASCOC, was echoed by other members who agreed not to contest the presidency.
"Barry is steering SASCOC in a positive new direction. We must let him continue, as I don't see anyone else capable of maintaining this progress. He has brought stability to the federation, and we should support him in continuing his good work. Over the past four years, Barry has demonstrated outstanding leadership, and we all agree he is the best choice to lead SASCOC at this time," said Ramsamy.
The following individuals are eligible to contest for board positions: Cecilia Molokwane, Sanele Mthiyane, George Conway Stainton, Nomsa Mahlangu, Kim Pople, Lihaam Groenewald, Nompumelelo Ntshangase, David Gideon Kok, Linda Carol Stephen, Winston Abraham Meyer, Themba Silvin Hlasho, Mashilo Isaac Matsetela, Digwadi Ronald Mohlabi, James Mosebetsi Moloi, and Wilhelmina Hendrika Moekie Grobbelaar.
