Cian Oldknow gearing up for debut Olympic Games in Paris

South African long-distance runner Cian Oldknow is eagerly anticipating her debut at the Olympic Games in Paris next month.

Oldknow secured her spot in the women’s 42.2km marathon when she finished 15th at the Sevilla Marathon in Spain, comfortably eclipsing the qualifying time in 2:25:08 earlier this year.

Having only just ventured into marathon running and completing three races, including winning the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon in January and SA marathon title in Durban in April, Oldknow is now relishing her experience on the biggest stage in the sport.

“The preparations for the Olympics are going well, and I am ready for my first Games, I have no specific expectations; I just want to enjoy my marathon experience at the highest level," she told Oldknow.

"I have put in a lot of work into my preparations, and it’s hard to believe July is almost here. I’m not making significant changes to my training regimen and am keeping everything consistent.

"My focus is on staying healthy, respecting my body, and avoiding unnecessary injuries."

Teaming up with countrywoman Gerda Steyn and Irvette Van Zyl in the three-member female marathon squad, Oldknow could not be in better hands when it comes to guidance.

"Becoming an Olympian will truly sink in when I arrive at the Olympic village. I am thrilled to be on the same team as my role models, Irvette and Gerda," she added.

"They have encouraged me to be myself and to embrace the experience of going to the Games. My goal is to achieve a top-15 finish.

"My mother and the rest of the family provide unwavering support, which keeps me going.  Being a professional athlete in South Africa is challenging, and I couldn’t have reached this point without the support of those around me."
