Glenrose Xaba describes her busy race schedule as part of her training routine

South African 10km champion Glenrose Xaba has fired back at critics who accuse her of over-racing, arguing that she is unfairly singled out while others go unnoticed.

Xaba recently set a new course record at the Absa Run Your City in Tshwane, finishing in 31 minutes and 51 seconds, earning the R30 000 prize. This marked her third sub-32-minute performance, breaking the previous record set by Ethiopian Debash Desta in 2023 by 23 seconds.

Despite competing in every Spar Women’s 10km and Run Your City race this year, winning all four of her last four races, Xaba shows no signs of fatigue.

"No, I'm not over-racing, why me when I'm racing they saying I'm over-racing but when others are racing, they say they are training. Even me, I'm training, I just want to keep the momentum of the legs so they can stay strong because Ethiopians don't race, they train," Xaba said.

Xaba dismisses any claims of over-racing, stating that this is arguably her best year as a runner.

She has broken two 10km records, won the Total Sports Women’s 10km title, as well as the Absa and Spar 10km races, and successfully defended her national 10km title. To cap it all off, she has achieved three-sub-32-minute finishes in a single year.

"I'm not over-racing, I just keep the consistency and also keeping the speed and keep the body very fit so that I don't struggle when it comes to the competitions, to stay competitive all the time."

Xaba has little time to dwell on her recent impressive performance, as she is now focused on the upcoming Spar 10km Grand Prix series and the Run Your City races on 21 and 24 September.
