It’s about time Africa wins its first Olympic 100m medal – Letsile Tebogo

According to Botswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, Africa’s wait for its first Olympic Games medal in the 100m is nearly over.

Tebogo confidently secured his spot in the semifinal tonight with a time of 10,01 seconds, finishing second in his heat.

He is optimistic that either he or Akani Simbine will clinch a medal in the final on the same day, Tebogo told SABC Sport that the world will be stunned by Africa’s performance on Sunday night.

"It's going to be the first time, it's going to be a big shocker for everybody out there seeing African athletes making the podium finish. We could make it if we are all dedicated to the work but for me if I could see five Africans the final, I will be the most happiest human being in the world," Tebogo said.

Tebogo is receiving lots of support from South Africa and neighbouring countries, not just Botswana.

Earlier this year, he spent a few months in South Africa for a training camp to prepare for the Olympics.

"I really appreciate the support from our neighbouring countries, we should cheer each other, Akani, Benji [Benjamin Richardson], that's something that I'd really love to see a lot of Africans in the finals,” he added.

“Not like back then when you knew that it's Americans and Jamaicans only in the finals. So, for now, I believe making it to the semifinal then will just switch on and see how they can make it to the final."
