Having clinched his Olympic qualification with a remarkable 44.31-second run, which stands as his personal best, the 21-year-old is set to compete in the men’s 400m event in Morocco at 7:48pm.
Pillay is eagerly anticipating his debut in the Diamond League, eager to face off against top athletes in his discipline as he steps onto the starting blocks.
"I am competing in my first Diamond League this weekend in Marrakesh. So, I'm quite excited for my debut there and then potentially I might have one more race towards the end of the month, depending on how things go this weekend and then from them we're gonna cut back, sit back and train for a bit again, build up for the rest of June," Pillay said.
Pillay finds motivation in South Africa’s 100m record holder, Akani Simbine, who frequently participates in the Diamond League meetings.
Pillay learns valuable lessons from Simbine, who recently secured victory in the prestigious competition in China, triumphing over elite athletes from around the globe.
"I mean for me looking at AK, he inspires me in two different ways and first of all Akani Simbine as you know truly displays a lot of class. He really mastered his craft but also, I get to interact with him on a personal basis in training and I mean seeing him behind the scenes as just himself as the humble Akani, feet on the ground. I mean for me seeing that and him excel and also really show the world that he's capable of really pushing through the limits is inspiring for me," he added.
