Namakoe Nkhasi favourite to win the Tuks Bestmed 10km race

Lesotho’s accomplished long-distance runner Namakoe Nkhasi, who trains under the guidance of Coach Michael Seme in Tshwane, stands out as a key contender at the upcoming Tuks Bestmed race hosted at the University of Pretoria this Saturday.

This annual event features four race distances; 10km, 5km, a fun/walk, and the challenging 21.1km half-marathon, all kicking off at 6 am.

 The half-marathon will begin with the starter’s gun at 6 am, followed by the 10km race 30 minutes later, the 5km race at 6:40 am, and the 1km run/walk at 8 am.

Elite runners often utilize this event as part of their season preparations, and Nkhasi is no exception.

Nkhasi, speaking with SABC Sport, confirmed his entry into the 10km race, seeking to leverage his remarkable Personal best time of 27 minutes and 52 seconds for the distance, harbouring aspirations for a stellar performance during the upcoming weekend. 

Nkhasi, the Absa Run Your City 10km race winner last September, shared his excitement about joining Lesotho’s team for the upcoming Africa Games in Ghana.

“Lesotho included me in its team for the Africa Games in Ghana next month, and I am utilizing this race as part of my training run,” 

He emphasized the significance of the event in preparing for future races, stating, “It is a good race to prepare and gauge one’s readiness for the upcoming races,” Despite aiming for the top spot on the podium. He clarified, “There is no pressure for me to win the race,”

However, he admitted, “I am eyeing the first place on the podium,” he told the national broadcaster before his final training session with the Sponge training group in Tshwane on Friday.

He explained his plans for the upcoming races: "In Ghana, I will do the half-marathon, but in Tshwane, I want to work on my speed in the 10km. I am anticipating a busy year on the athletics calendar. It’s an Olympic year and I don’t want to miss a single race,” said Nkhasi.
