Netball South Africa confirms the Proteas participation in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament

Netball South Africa (NSA) president Cecilia Molokwane has confirmed to SABC Sport that the Proteas will compete in the Netball Africa Cup, scheduled for December 8-14 in Swakopmund, Namibia.

The team will be led by newly appointed coach Jenny van Dyk and captain Khanyisa Chawane. Molokwane, who also serves as the president of Africa Netball, revealed that Botswana and Uganda will participate in the tournament as well.

Uganda and Botswana did not participate in the Africa Cup of Nations Under-21 World Cup qualifiers held at the University of Pretoria in 2023. However, both nations will have the chance to compete at Africa's highest level next month.

Uganda’s netball program, previously under administration by World Netball, has since resolved its issues and elected a new board.

“We are going to Namibia. Namibia is ready to host and deliver a great event for the national teams. I have visited Namibia three times to monitor preparations, and I can confidently say they are ready. We have worked closely with the Namibian Netball Association and their sports ministry. I’ve also collaborated with Namibia’s minister of sport, who is very eager to make this a success for their country. Namibia looks to South Africa for inspiration, particularly with initiatives like the Telkom Netball League, and they’ve even requested our business plan to understand how we brought it to life,” said Molokwane.

Molokwane confirmed that NSA will field its strongest team in Namibia, emphasizing their commitment to continental netball competition.

“Coach Jenny told me she’s sending a strong team to Namibia. The 15 players who defeated Malawi in last month’s test series are the same ones heading to Swakopmund. This is another chance for both the coach and captain to demonstrate their capabilities for the country, and we are excited for the competition. We’re aiming for the title, and the coach shares that goal. We’re confident Namibia will put on a great show,” Molokwane said.
