Petra Kvitova and Donna Vekic to face off in Berlin final after marathon day

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Donna Vekic both had to come through two matches on Saturday to secure a place in the final of WTA Bett1Open.

With Friday's scheduled quarter-finals having been washed out by rain, Kvitova first saw off number three seed Caroline Garcia 6-4 7-6 (3) to progress to the last four.

Czech player Kvitova, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, then returned later to defeat ˜s-Hertogenbosch champion Ekaterina Alexandra 6-3 6-4.

Vekic, meanwhile, knocked out lucky loser Elina Avanesyan 6-2 7-6 (0) and then battled past sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-4 7-6 (8) to reach her 12th career final.

Alexandrova was the only semi-finalist not to have played twice on Saturday after Veronika Kudermetova had earlier withdrawn from their last-eight match because of a hip injury.

Meanwhile, at the Rothesay Classic in Birmingham, former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova will return to the top 10 after reaching her first grass-court final.

The Czech claimed her maiden singles grand slam title in 2021 but missed a chunk of last season with an elbow injury and dropped down the rankings.

Now the 27-year-old is back on the up and she is yet to drop a set so far at Edgbaston Priory, easing to a 6-3 6-2 victory over China™s Zhu Lin in the semi-finals.

It will be a battle of the top two seeds in the final, but second seed Jelena Ostapenko has had a contrasting path.

The powerful Latvian survived her third close three-setter in as many days, seeing off Russian Anastasia Potapova 5-7 6-2 6-4.
