Proteas resume with preparations ahead of three-day test against Malawi

Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane is excited to take on her first challenge in leadership when they host Malawi in a three-day test series at Ellis Park next week.

The Proteas will resume their preparations on Thursday when they assemble for camp in Johannesburg.

Chawane, who was announced as the new captain in August - told SABC Sport that her goal is to lead from the front, on and off the court.

"Yes, definitely it will be my first series that I'm leading this team. I`m a bit nervous but also excited it's a bunch of players that I've been working with. A bunch of players that trust me, I trust them as well. So, I'm really hoping that we are able to work together,” Chawane said.

“The team work that we have, for us to just put it out there on court and really perform. It's just being out there, leading by example, showing a lot of confidence, being clinical in my game and making sure that I perform to inspire the team to also do their best. “So, I think my first job is really to just do my part which is playing well and hoping that the team as well is able to draw from that and really play good netball and really do well. So, I'm looking forward to leading the team from the front, looking forward to doing well for the team and inspiring the team to actually also do well."

The national team will train for the first time as a collective from this Thursday, but Chawane confirmed that the coaches did manage to reach out to the players in various provinces through virtual sessions.

"I really have high expectations from the team because of all the hard work that we've been putting in. All the sessions that we've been having, we might not have had camps together but the coaches have been travelling to the different provinces and making sure that they put in sessions with the national players,” she added.

“Everyone has really been putting in the work and the expectation coming to camp is just us putting it together so that by the time we get into the series, we really flawless."
