SASCOC edging closer to official name change to Sport SA

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is nearing the completion of its name change process, according to first vice-president Lwandile Simelane.

The Olympic body will soon be known as Sport SA, following a successful agreement with the rights holder of the name.

The new name has been carefully chosen to encompass and honour both Olympic and Paralympic athletes, ensuring inclusivity within the organization.

"Yes, constitutionally, we've changed the name internally, for ourselves so we've got all the approvals in place from our general assembly," said Simelane.

"What we're busy with now is all the legal requirements of an actual legal name change, so we're working with the various departments of the State, whose responsibility is to ensure that we facilitate in a legal manner."

Simelane also shed light on the reason behind the delays in the name change process, emphasizing the necessity of following a meticulous step-by-step approach to avoid legal ramifications in the future.

"There's no stalling, we're following protocols and processes, and all of the policies of a name change – you have to register names, run through the particular criteria for having the name, that's the point we're at now," she added.

"So the first step was for us internally to accept the name, which happened, and it has been effectively changed in our constitution as well. However, before we can start using the name, we need to ensure that we have the legal right from the relevant offices."
