Swimming South Africa boss Alan Fritz sets goals for 2024 Olympic Games

President of Swimming South Africa Alan Fritz believes the sport is making significant strides as it gears up for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

During the World Aquatics Championships Trials held in Durban, four swimmers successfully met the qualifying standards.

Olympic gold medalist Tatjana Schoenmaker achieved qualifying times in both the preliminary and final rounds of the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke events, while Kaylene Corbett excelled in the 200m breaststroke final along with four-time Olympic medallist Chad le Clos securing qualification in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

"The successful qualification of athletes for the Paris Olympic Games provides a promising glimpse into the composition of our team," Fritz said in an interview with SABC Sport.

"The swift pace of the global swimming arena is evident when considering the impressive times worldwide. Although we find ourselves slightly behind our preferred position, the overall performance was commendable and could secure a semi-final or final berth at the Olympic Games.

"It’s worth noting that our athletes will have another opportunities to qualify at upcoming championships in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in the New Year."

Fritz further expressed excitement at the emerging swimmers, who are showing an appetite for success.

"A notable highlight from the Trials in Durban is the emergence of new talent, a positive sign for the future of swimming in our country," he added.

"Despite challenges in facilities, I am genuinely excited about the state of swimming in our nation."

Fritz extends his best wishes to the swimmers for the New Year, offering encouragement to those who have not yet secured qualification for the Olympics.

"My words to our dedicated athletes currently immersed in rigorous training are simple: every one of you possesses the ability to attain personal trials.

"Striving for the next goal and maintaining unwavering self-belief will elevate your performance. Despite the intensity of training, the holiday season provides a valuable opportunity to reconnect with family and friends.

"This rekindling of connections not only fosters belief but also as a source of renewed motivation. Embrace the festive spirit, enjoy the season, and may success accompany you in your preparations for the impending competition,” concluded the SSA boss.
