Team SA wheelchair tennis duo ready to rewrite history at Paris Paralympics

Team SA’s Donald Ramphadi says they are ready to rewrite history when they play for bronze in the wheelchair tennis quad doubles with his fellow partner Lucas Sithole on Wednesday.

The duo will face Brazil’s Mane Silver and Leandro Pena as they chase for the crucial win at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Speaking to SABC Sport Ramphadi says they are looking forward to securing a win and adding a medal for Team SA.

"We are very excited about playing for the bronze, we are very aware that this is the first time a South African quad division has doubles in the Paralympics. So, we know very well that clinching the bronze medal will be us making history. So, we're looking forward to it definitely, we do wanna bring it home from the bottom of our hearts," Ramphadi said.

Ramphadi and Sithole lost their previous match in the semifinals to the Netherlands duo Sam Schroder and Niels Vink.

The 30-year-old says despite the loss, the experience of playing in a huge cheering crowd was life-changing and stated that he and Lucas will have to gel more ahead of their next match.

"I mean, it was unbelievable, great experience playing in the big court, I've never actually saw myself playing in that court and to see all the fans chanting for us, chanting our names, supporting us like that because we might not have won the match but we won the fans,” he added.

“So, it was really a great experience, we played our hearts out. We played from the first point and we did well, I'm excited about the performance. It just that I feel like me and Lucas just need to play a few more games together because we haven't been playing together for the longest time."
