Udeme Okon credits his coach for being a junior world champion

South African 400m rising star Udeme Okon has credited his coach, Lyle Wentzel, for his exceptional performance at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru.

Okon secured gold in the 400m and added a silver in the 4x400m relay, returning home with two medals.

Upon his arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night, he was greeted with a hero’s welcome.

Okon attributes his success to the guidance of his mentor, Wentzel, who has played a pivotal role in his development, helping him rise through the ranks to become a world champion in his age group.

"We met last year in August and I'm really grateful for him because he actually did the most for me. There were times where I need new spikes he provided for me, even when I needed new tracksuits, all of those things and I'm forever grateful for him. He also takes time out of his day just to try and help out and make me the best athlete," Okon said.

The grade 11 learner was deeply moved by the overwhelming reception from his school classmates, who showed up in large numbers at OR Tambo International Airport to welcome him.

He hadn't anticipated such a turnout, making the experience one he'll never forget.

"It feels good, I'm happy that there's so much people here showing how much they've supported me throughout this journey and I know I worked hard for this moment so I just make sure, just to keep my self-composed throughout the competition and make everyone that came out to watch me proud."
