World champion Phumelela Cafu finally receives his WBO World title belt

It’s been over a month since Phumelela “The Truth” Cafu was crowned a WBO junior-bantamweight world champion, and yesterday, he finally received his belt.

Cafu’s promotions company, Boxing 5, held a short ceremony to celebrate him and also hand over the belt.

Cafu shocked the former world champion Kosei Tanaka, beating him via a split decision to win the title. Cafu also thanked former WBO junior-featherweight world champion Zolani Tete, who lent him a belt when he was still waiting for his.

"Yeah, it feels amazing knowing that I get to keep my belt with me. I get to show people that I'm a world champion and I'll also like to thank bhuti Zolani Tete because when I got home, I didn't have a title [belt] so he borrowed me his title,” Cafu said.

“It feels amazing seeing my title as you can see it's shiny so it's kinda amazing because I get to add to my title.”

After a month-long break at home, Cafu is back in Johannesburg, and he will soon be starting a light training programme, but he’s clear about his future intentions going forward.

"And it's crazy I thought I have five titles but it turns out I have seven titles. So, it feels amazing, I've never thought in my life I'd have seven titles. I'm about to add three more world titles to my collection that's the plan so in the future I hope I will be able to do that because you know I've always told you I wanna be a world champion, now here I am, I am a world champion,” he added.

“So, the goal is to defend my title a couple of times then hopefully in the future unify the division."

Cafu’s trainer and manager, Colin “Nomakanjani” Nathan also took time to explain the reasons behind the delay of the arrival of the belt.

"A lot of people don't know this but when we beat Tanaka, we borrowed Tanaka's belt because the promoter had to buy us a new belt. So, that took two weeks to happen and then of course the belt arrived but Phumelela was in East London and then Larry said to me, let's do a nice presentation here this afternoon,” Nathan said.

“So, all things kinda fell into place and here we are this afternoon. So, a lot of people need to understand that when a champion loses he still keeps that belt, that's still his belt, the promoter has to buy and make another belt for the new champion and that's why there was a delay in the belt."
