If granted, ASA will host the biggest track and field event in Africa with some of the big names in world athletics coming to Mzansi.
Moloi said World Athletics would invite international athletes to compete in South Africa in 2023, with ASA planning to organise four Grand Prix Series meetings in four cities next year.
“We have applied for that Gold Label for next year. So, if – and only if – things go well, we are waiting for World Athletics to announce if they are going to be giving it to us,” Moloi told SABC Sport.
“So we’ll have four grands prix next year, plus the Gold Label – where all international athletes will be invited by World Athletics to come and compete here.
“We don’t want to rush Diamond League and all that, but as [for] Gold Label, it will help us boost the morale of our athletes in South Africa, and even internationally.
“We are negotiating with companies, we will have more money and our athletes won’t have to go and fly outside the country, and be tired and all that.
“Every year we’ll add and apply for other Diamond Leagues, if there are those where Gold Label will apply for Diamond League. But I’m urging all of us – media, South Africans, let’s support each other so that we can grow athletics in South Africa.”
