The two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has smashed his own long standing 2018 marathon world record by 30 seconds, at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.
The 37-year-old Kenyan track star was on his own league in the German capital from the start of the race. He crossed the finish line in 2:01:9 to smash and set up a new world record in the same course.
Kipchoge gave credit to the team work.
"I am happy with my preparation and I think I was so fast because of the teamwork. Everything is down to teamwork," he said.
"What motivates me is my family and I want to inspire young people. Sport unites people and that is what motivates me."
At 35km he was over sixty seconds within his world record pace, however he slowed down a bit, with 2km to go he was almost 36 seconds faster than his 2018 winning time.
When asked whether he would attempt a sub-two hour run in Berlin next year, Kipchoge said-"Let us plan for another day.
"I will celebrate this record and have to realise what happens. Just roll and see what happens."
This Kipchoges fourth victory in Berlin and now he matches-up Ethiopias great Haile Gebrselassie's record.
Fellow Kenyan Mark Korir was second, four minutes and 49 seconds behind Kipchoge, with Ethiopian Tadu Abate third.
While in the women's race, Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa ran the third fastest time in history to set a course record of 2:15.37.
