KZN Athletics president Steve Mkasi to run for a second term

KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) president Steve Mkasi has confirmed to SABC Sport about his intentions to seek a second term in office during next year’s elections.

The elections, which occur every four years, will take place after his current term ends in June.

Mkasi, who also serves as a board member of the Comrades Marathon Association, believes there is unfinished business from his first term.

He aims to extend his leadership by another four years to fulfil the promises he made during his initial tenure.

"I have given it some thoughts I think you come with a plan. You can't sit through one term, I think you need two terms to be judged whether your plan was good or bad. It's the same thing with ASA as well,” Mkasi said.

“James [Moloi] had a term, next year's term is coming to an end. If it were up to me, the athletics committee would allow him the opportunity to now put his, the entire executive actually, to put what they've been cooking this year into action.

“There've been disappointing moments where we feel that people are not acting timeously on certain things but I think this is the time now that they can start acting and show us what they are made up of."

Mkasi admitted that he may not be liked by everyone in the province but emphasized that it is not about popularity, rather, it is about the impact he has made for KZNA over the past four years.

"No, for me it's not about love, it's about what I give to the community of athletics in KwaZulu Natal. They'll always be distractors, those who don't like you as a person whether you do good or you do bad,” he added.

“Go and look at the financials of KwaZulu Natal Athletics. Go and look at the performance of the province. As a province, we've moved back to the years where the province used to have sponsorship. We end each year with a positive balance of over R2 million.

“We may not have an academy because the model of the academy that was used is not working. It requires kids to be removed from parents and be associated in an area where in terms of safeguarding you can't assure the parents that their kids will be safe. So, I think we are on the right path."
