Lesufi makes big call on Swallows future

Swallows president Panyaza Lesufi has stepped down from his role at the club.

This comes after the long-serving Gauteng MEC for Education was elected ANC chairman in the province early last week, leading to the decision that has been taken to surrender his duties at the Soweto club.

Lesufi was instrumental alongside chairman David Mogashoa in bringing back the Dube Birds out of oblivion - purchasing the status of Maccabi FC in 2019 to return to the Premier Soccer League, but in the second tier of domestic football.

In about a year Swallows were promoted under then coach Brandon Truter to officially be guaranteed a place in the topflight for the first time since 2015.

But the fairytale story is now over, although it is bittersweet for Lesufi, whose new role as ANC chairman puts him in line to be the next Gauteng Premier.

SABC Sport understands that Lesufi informed Swallows fans in a small gathering on Sunday that he would be resigning as the club president.

He issued a statement on his personal Twitter account.

With my new responsibilities, today, painfully so, I had to resign my position as President of ⁦@Moroka_Swallows⁩. I wish the team well. Don™t follow me follow the birds pic.twitter.com/MxwDywlsEA— Panyaza Lesufi (@Lesufi) July 3, 2022
