Nkosikhona Mhlakwana to shift focus to marathon after the Comrades marathon

Long-distance runner Nkosikhona Mhlakwana plans to take a break from the Comrades Marathon and focus on marathons full-time after Sunday’s Ultimate Human Race, an 85km race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

When the starter’s gun goes off at 5.30 am, Mhlakwana will line up as the local favourite to win the Up Run could be his final Comrades before switching distances.

Entering his fourth Comrades, with his best finish being sixth two years ago, the Hollywood Athletics Club runner is seen as a strong contender to break the three-year winning streak of the Nedbank Running Club.

''I think the Olympics will still come for me to be able to participate. It is my second up run, maybe next year  but I don't see myself coming back for Comrades, because we have better goals we want to achieve over the 42km distance,'' said Mhlakwana.

Mhlakwana draws inspiration from South African marathon star Stephen Mokoka, who has qualified for three Olympic Games.

Mokoka has competed internationally and secured victories in major races over the 42.2km distance.

''First of all I have to qualify for the Olympics, with my manager Dr Mohale I think we are on the right path. One has to plan big, and I'm motivated by the likes of Stephen Mokoka for all that he has done in the country and in the world,'' added Mhlakwana.

Although this year’s Olympic Games marathon deadline has passed, Mhlakwana aims to qualify for the World Championships in Japan next year.

At 30 years old, he still has the opportunity to make his Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games in 2026.
