No cars at next Olympic Games, say Los Angeles 2028 organisers

Los Angeles 2028 organisers are planning a "no car" Olympic Games that will make the most of the infrastructure around existing venues.

Organisers in Paris had sustainability as a watchword when planning the Olympics and LA will continue that theme.

Existing venues for the Games will include the Coliseum Stadium which was used for both the 1932 and 1984 Games in the city.

Venues are around the LA region, although softball and canoe slalom events will be staged in Oklahoma City - over 1,200 miles away - to keep costs under control as suitable venues are available.

An "authentically Los Angeles" Games is the aim, with mayor Karen Bass underlining the city's diversity as well as outlining plans to make using public transport a requisite of attending any sporting action.

She said: "We're already working to create jobs by expanding our public transportation system in order for us to have a no-car Games. That's a feat in Los Angeles â- we've always been in love with our cars. But we're already working to ensure we can build a greener Los Angeles.

"No-car Games means that you will have to take public transportation to get to all the venues. In order to do that, we have been building out our transportation system."

Bass added more than 3,000 buses will be required, borrowed from around the country, with employers set to be encouraged to either stagger working hours or switch to working from home where possible for the duration of the Games.

Swimming is due to be held in the SoFi stadium and given the NFL stadium will be turned into a pool following the opening ceremony, it has precipitated the need to move athletics to the first week of competition in a break with tradition.

After a 128-year absence, cricket will be back on the Olympic menu in LA.

Cricket has been included just once in the Games' storied history, with Britain and France the only entrants at the 1900 event in Paris, with the visitors emerging victorious.

The sport's return in America will be in the T20 format, although a venue has yet to be announced.

Men's baseball and women's softball are other bat sports to join the Los Angeles roster, with both having dipped in and out the programme in recent times.

Lacrosse sixes is another unfamiliar sport along with flag football â- a variation of American football in which rather than tackling, you remove a flag from the ball carrier's belt.

Beach sprint rowing makes its debut with competitors starting and finishing with a dash across the sand before hitting the water, while squash rounds out the additional sports on the programme after a lengthy challenge for inclusion.

The Los Angeles Olympics will run from 14-30 July 2028.
