Sascoc set to make major changes

It is a busy period for the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), who are set for some major changes, including a new name, in the coming weeks.

However, the Sascoc board will look to shorten the name to Sport SA at a Special General Meeting to adopt the new constitution as well as formally adopt the new name as of July.

President Barry Hendricks has said that the only item on the agenda during the meeting was to adopt the new constitution and name, which he believes will appeal to sponsors and South Africans in general.

"The new Sascoc name will be the South African Sports Confederation Olympic and Paralympic Committee, but in order to shorten it and create a better brand, we're going to adopt the name of Sport SA in future," said Hendricks.

"The Special General Meeting to adopt the constitution specifically - and that's the only agenda item, as well as formally adopt the new name - will take place in the first week of July."

Meanwhile, Hendricks further confirmed that Sascoc would announce the Commonwealth Games team in the first week of June, though this would be split into two groups.

"The Commonwealth Games team will be announced in the first week of June, and we might even split that up because some of the codes will only be selected by the Commonwealth Games Federation after that.

"So, the first week of June is our planned time to announce the first group of names," he concluded.
