According to Athletics South Africa (ASA) Road Running chairperson, Enoch Skosana Road running in the country is on the right track.
The 48-year-old retired Road Runner said he is elated with the standard of Road Running in Mzansi and believes that they will soon close the gap between the country and the East African runners.
Skosana singled out the Cape Town Marathon as the leading event on the continent.
About the standard of the marathon in South Africa, I believe that if we can check the Cape Town Marathon now they are leading on the standard, Im also impressed of the Cape Town Marathon the way they do things we can learn from them. Cape town is now a leading event in Africa said Skosana
He also indicated that he is excited about the future of the event.
The Veteran Runner is optimistic that in the 2023 athletics season the local runners will have more opportunities to showcase their God-given talents on the road.
With the World Athletics Road Running Championships to take place in Latvia next year, Skosana has indicated that ASA is planning to host a time trial for athletes to qualify for the event in Latvia.
I believe for 2023 we will have the exciting road running especially when we going to prepare for the Half marathon and World Champs, because they also add 5km championship so that we can also have those guys who are running 1500km- 3000km on board to run, road running. Im so excited to World athletics to have introduced 5km the excited Skosana added.
The former SA road runner said he banks on the experience of Gerda Steyn and Stephen Mokoka to come to the fore at the major championships. The pair will decide whether to run in the World Championships or Commonwealth Games as the two events are close to each other.
He also advised the athletes, not to over ace and to choose their races carefully to avoid fatigue and peaking too early.
