Malinga scored a spectacular try in the second half to help the national secure a 31- 24 win against Japan.
Speaking to SABC Sport Malinga believes there is still much to work on as she adapts to the 15s but is pleased with her individual performance in their first match.
“I feel like I played my role well, as a wing yesterday. I do believe there’s a lot I still need to work on as I adapt to the 15s, but I am happy with my overall performance against Japan,’’ said Malinga.
Due to injury, Malinga missed out on the 2021 Women’s Rugby World in New Zealand.
She says it feels good to be back in the WXV tournament, to help the national team build up to next year’s World Cup in England - which she would love to be part of.
“I am excited with my return to the 15s side, I don’t think it will be difficult to adapt and I am happy to build with the team and enjoy the WXV2 - which will give us some guidance ahead of the World Cup,’’ added Malinga.
The 26-year-old says their first WXV 2 win against Japan was important to set the tone for the rest of the tournament, and believes it will entice fans to go to the stadium to support the national team.
“The win was very important for us, it set the tone for the rest of the tournament. I also think it will propel fans around Cape Town to want to buy tickets and support us - which will give us the confidence we need to finish the tournament strong,’’ she concluded.
Next stop for the Boks women will be against Australia next Saturday. And Malinga believes it will be important to play for enjoyment in their second match and the results will follow.
