Currie Cup: Cheetahs hold on for victory after Griffons launch sensational fightback

The Griffons almost pulled off a sensational come-from-behind victory but fell short as they went down 47-45 to the Cheetahs in their Currie Cup clash in Welkom.

It seemed a one-side contest had ensued when the team from Bloemfontein raced into a 33-0 after 35 minutes as the visitors crossed the try-line five time to secure a bonus-point.

Carl Wegner, Carel-Jan Coetzee, Aranos Coetzee, Daniel Maartens and Corne Fourie all went over for five-pointers as the contest looked to be done.

The home side ended the half on a high though when Thato Mavundla ran a good line to break through the Cheetahs' defence on his way to the tryline.

Rian Olivier sprinted in for a try just after the interval to reduce the deficit further but the home side were pegged back when the Cheetahs were awarded a penalty try of their own.

Kyle Cyster went over for the Griffons' bonus-point try and Gurshwin Wehr also scored to make it a close ball game going into the final stages.

Qamani Kota made it a seven-point ball game with his third conversion of the game.

With less than three minutes left on the clock, Wehr found himself in the first receiver role for the Griffons in his own half and his quick feet were too much for the Cheetahs as he raced away for a sensational try.

The Griffons had one final attack to win the game at the death, but they control of the ball as the try was beckoning.
