Currie Cup: Pumas hammer Griffons while Griquas steal late win over Lions

Defending Currie Cup champions the Pumas moved to the top of the table after thrashing the Griffons 64-6 in Welkom on Sunday.

The visitors scored 10 tries in the contest and put 45 unanswered points past their hapless opponents in the second half.

The Pumas scored three five-pointers in the first half as flanker Deon Slabbert, scrumhalf Giovan Snyman and lock Malembe Mpofu went over.

Griffons flyhalf Robbie Petzer slotted two penalties but the hosts trailed 19-6 at the break and it did not get any better from there.

Outside centre Diego Appollis scored the Pumas' bonus-point try four minutes after the interval while replacement hooker came on and helped himself to a hat-trick of tries.

A crafty try from replacement scrumhalf Chriswill September was followed by replacement flyhalf Brandon Thomson scoring to complete a massacre.

Lions 18 - 25 Griquas

Cebolenkosi Dlamini scored a try in injury-time to give Griquas a 25-18 victory over Lions in their Currie Cup clash at Ellis Park.

The hosts took a 10-8 lead into the halftime break thanks to try by Zeilinga Strydom while fullback Tiaan Swanepoel added a conversion and penalty.

George Whitehead slotted a penalty for Griquas in the opening period while hooker Janco Uys went over for try that was not converted.

Griquas took went in front with a try from scrumhalf Johan Mulder, converted by Eddie Fouche with the latter adding a penalty a few minutes later.

The Lions though clawed their way as flanker JC Pretorious went over for a late five-pointer that was not converted to leave the scores level.

The game headed into injury-time and prop Dlamini proved to be the hero for the visitors barging over for the winning try.
