Former Bok prop Coenie Oosthuizen retires from rugby

Veteran prop Coenie Oosthuizen has called time on a storied career that saw him earn 30 Springbok caps and make over 270 first-class appearances.

Oosthuizen joined The Sharks from his beloved CHeetahs in 2016, bringing with him a reputation as one of South Africa's most formidable props.

From the moment he donned the black and white jersey, his robust scrummaging, combined with his surprising agility and ball-handling skills, quickly made him a cornerstone of The Sharks' forward pack.

In 2020, Oosthuizen left The Sharks to join Sale Sharks in England. His departure was a significant loss for The Sharks, but it was also a testament to his talent and the high regard in which he was held internationally. However, much to the delight of The Sharks' faithful, Oosthuizen made a triumphant return to Durban in 2023. His comeback was met with widespread excitement, as fans and teammates alike welcomed back their beloved prop.

Sadly, Oosthuizen's return to The Sharks was not to last as long as many had hoped. A severe neck injury sustained during a match in 2024, forced Coenie to make the heart-wrenching decision to retire from professional rugby.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from professional rugby,"the 35-year-old told the Sharks website.

"After 17 incredible years on the field, the time has come for me to step away from the sport I love so dearly. I began my journey with the Cheetahs and had the honour of playing for several special clubs, including the Sharks and the Sale Sharks, before returning to the Sharks, where my career has come to an unexpected end.

"This decision has been one of the hardest I've ever had to make. Unfortunately, an injury has forced me to hang up my boots earlier than I had hoped. While this is not the ending, I envisioned, I recognise the importance of prioritising my health so that I can be there for my beautiful familyâ”my amazing wife, our two wonderful daughters, and another little one on the way. My greatest joy now will be living a full and active life with them by my side."

One of the highlights of Oosthuizen's career at The Sharks was the triumphant 2018 Currie Cup campaign. The Sharks clinched the title after a hard-fought victory against Western Province in the final at Newlands Stadium. Oosthuizen's experience and tenacity in the scrum were pivotal throughout the tournament, cementing his status as a key player in the team's success.

"Throughout my career, I've been blessed with the unwavering support of so many incredible individuals," Oosthuizen continued.

"To my coaches, teammates, medical staff, and the fans who have cheered me on from the stands and from afar, thank you for believing in me and for the unforgettable moments we've shared. A special thank you to The Sharks for continuously supporting me and assisting me throughout this injury. I am particularly grateful for the privilege of representing my country on several occasions, an honour I will cherish forever. Thank you all for the memories and the support throughout my journey. I am eternally grateful and excited for the next chapter of my life."

Oosthuizen will be remembered not just as a player who gave his all on the field but as a mentor, a leader, and an embodiment of the spirit of The Sharks.

"I haven't had the privilege of coaching Coenie for more than one season, but I am glad that I had the opportunity," said Head Coach, John Plumtree.

"He is a highly skillful player and an excellent leader who has guided and mentored many younger players. Above all, he is a lovely character and an asset to have in the team. I'm sure he will make an excellent coach and wish him and his family all the best with their future endeavours."
