Jaco Kriel fights back tears during emotional Lions farewell

Though he finished his career on a high note with a big win for the Lions over Zebre, the now-retired loose-forward Jaco Kriel admits it was still a very tough experience.

The Lions won 50-35 against Zebre in the United Rugby Championship (URC) on Saturday in what was the final match of Kriel's long rugby career.

The 33-year-old from Standerton had been a constant feature for the Lions, earning his way into Bok recognition during his prime. However, injuries took their toll in the later years, and Kriel knows the time was right to step down.

That didn't make it any easier to say goodbye, however.

"It almost felt unreal as we drove in with the bus. I was almost in tears because you realise it's your last team meeting, last bus trip and last everything," Kriel said.

"I knew I had to get my emotions under control and do what I can on the field for the team. The 80 minutes was about going through the processes for the team.

"The first 40 minutes went by quite quickly, but when we walked out at half-time, Andries Coetzee, reminded me that I had my last 40 minutes left.

"It kicked in a bit, but during the game, you don't always worry about such. It was tough, and I started cramping. I can't remember the last time I played two consecutive 80-minute games.

"It showed that if you do it for a team, you can bite the dust and make sure that you go all the way."

Kriel said his teammates made sure his send-off was a special one.

"It was quite special when my teammates hoisted me onto their shoulders," Kriel said.

"When Willem Alberts picked me up, he was quick to joke and say I was no longer 96kgs. It was a dead weight, but we had a good laugh about it."

"It was special."
