Lions win cat fight against the Cheetahs to book place in Currie Cup final

Sanele Nohamba made an impact in the second half to help the Lions beat the Cheetahs 43-34 at Ellis Park and book a place in the Currie Cup final.

Nohamba, surprisingly named on the bench for the last-four clash, scored 12 points and turned the tide in the Lions' favour as the teams went into the halftime break with the score at 19-19.

A brace of tries and two conversions from flyhalf Ethan Wentzel powered the Cheetahs into a 14-0 lead but Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Jarod Cairns both scored five-pointers as the hosts hit back to level the score.

The Lions took the lead for the time in the contest when captain Marius Louw scored a try soon after the interval while Kade Wolhuter added the conversion.

Nohamba then entered the fray and struck a penalty before weaving his way through the defence of the visitors to score a try under poles.

Morne Brandon then sealed the game with a breakaway try while Nohamba added the extras from the kick tee.

Cheetahs substitute George Lourens banked the final try before the final hooter but it proved to be a consolation as Lions will go for glory next week.
